You hooked me at the gitgo with Hunter S. Thompson. Back in 1969, I think it was, or maybe 1970, Hunter and I used to frequent the same dark little Italian joint in DC. Anna Maria’s it was called, with an ageless picture of Anna herself on the wall, fresh-made fettucini in the kitchen and bottles of cheap chianti on the tables. We’d slip into the alley out back and share a joint and exchange a tab of this or a blotter of that. Later, after “Fear and Loathing” hit big, I’d still run into Thompson there from time to time. Forty years later, Anna’s grandsons were still running the place and Hunter’s signed photo hung on a wall of celebrity pics next to Bob Hope and Muhammad Ali. It’s all gone now: the photo wall, the pasta, the portrait of Anna, all gave way to a well-lit bar where millennials play board games and drink obscure whiskeys and craft beers and bury their faces in their cell phones, typing out the next Great American Tweet. Hunter saw it coming and opted out.

I’m sure William Burroughs was in your theater, too, but he was probably nodding out in the back row.

Wow, this should be a writing exercise for anyone interested in contemporary literature. As an admirer of all three writers, this was very entertaining for me!
