Phuket (province and island), Thailand

Location

Phuket is the name of a city, island, and a province (which includes Phuket island and several surrounding islands) in southern Thailand on the west coast in the Andaman Sea.

Phuket city is the capital of, and largest city in, Phuket province with just over 75,000 residents.

Climate and Geography

Phuket is Thailand’s biggest island. It’s 48 km long, 21 km wide, and covers about 543 square kilometers (not including the small surrounding islands, which are also part of Phuket province). Phuket is located in southwest Thailand, about 863 km south of Bangkok, in the Andaman Sea. Approximately 70% of the island is covered with small mountains that run north-south along the west side of the island. The tallest of these mountains is Mai Thao Sip Song at 529 m. The remaining 30% of the island is comprised of the plains and, of course, sandy beaches. The island is surprisingly deprived of fresh water, with just 9 brooks and creeks and no rivers.

The climate in Phuket is as tropical as they come. The temperature varies little and the year-round average high fluctuates around 32°C and the low around 24°C. Dry season is from November to April and the rainy season, during which it rains 270 – 400 mm per month, lasts from May to October.

Description

Phuket is a spectacular destination for all manner of tourism, adventure travel included. Unfortunately, this is not a secret. Phuket was chosen one of the world’s top five retirement destinations in 2005 by Fortune magazine and, with its own international airport, is also one of Thailand’s most visited, and thus most expensive, destinations. Fortunately, even the most expensive place in Thailand won’t break the bank.

The biggest draws on Phuket are ocean-based. Scuba diving here is huge. Phuket and the surrounding islands have brilliant underwater ecology with both hard and soft reefs, caves, wrecks, and a variety of marine life. Most dive shops are located at Chalong Pier. Sailing and yachting also bring a large number of visitors to the island and Phuket hosts numerous numerous races, including the King’s Cup Regatta.

Water board sports abound on Phuket. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wakeboarding (on a cable) are all readily available. What few people seem to know, though, is that Phuket has great surfing. The west coast has more breaks than you can count, local surf shops rent boards by the hour (about $5 USD) and day (about $15 USD) and also offer lessons (about $20 USD), and the Phuket Surfing Contest is held at Kata beach each year in the early fall.

**Rip tides are common in the ocean around Phuket, especially during monsoon season, and caution should be exercised at all times in the water**

On land Phuket has several protected areas including the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-hunting area in the north, which protects 20 square kilometers of rainforest. There is also Sirinat National Park on the northwestern coast is 90 square kilometers and includes Nai Yang Beach where the sea turtles lays eggs from November to February. These turtles are said to be giant but specific information was unavailable at the time of writing. Human-related activities have been contributing to a decline in turtle populations, and their visits to the island have been decreasing.

The mountains of Phuket are excellent for climbing, rappelling/abseiling, and hiking/trekking. Most of the popular beaches are in the south, such as Patong Beach, Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi, Nai Harn Beach, and Rawai Beach. Also worth checking out is Koh Sire, an island connected to Phuket by a causeway, which has a sea gypsy colony.

• Like the rest of Thailand, rooms in Phuket are very reasonable. Among the cheapest hostels is the Sea Blue Hostel & Gueshouse, with dorm beds for less than $5 USD per night. For a bit more, you can enjoy the awesome views at the Gypsy Room Patong Backpacker House (about $8 USD per night for a dorm bed).

• Even thought Phuket is expensive for Thailand, it’s still cheap compared to most places and meals in local restaurants can be purchased for $1.50 to $3.00 USD.

Bulgaria

Location

Bulgaria is in southeastern Europe bordering on Romania to the north, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east.

Major Cities

The biggest cities in Bulgaria are Sofia (the capital), Plovdiv, and Varna.

Climate and Geography

For a small country, Bulgaria has surprisingly diverse geography. Bulgaria’s 110,879 km² (an slightly larger than Iceland or Tennessee) includes topography ranging from 354 km of coastline on the Black Sea in the east to the Rila, Pirin, and Balkan mountain ranges in the western and central regions. In between is everything from plains to hills to mountains to valleys and gorges. Overall, Bulgaria is about 2/3 lowland plains and hills less than 600 m high, while the remaining third consists of mountains taller than 600 m. Bulgaria’s highest peak is Musala at 2,925 m.

Most of Bulgaria’s rivers (except the Danube, which makes up much of Bulgaria’s border with Romania) are short and shallow. The country has more than 2000 lakes, most of which are fairly small, and many mineral springs can be found along faults between mountains in the central and southwestern parts of the country.

Bulgaria sits between the continental and Mediterranean climactic zones. Because these zones often meet in Bulgaria’s mountains great climactic diversity can often be found across short distances.  Generally speaking the north of the country is 1°C cooler than the south and receives more rain. Temperatures in Bulgaria peak in July and August with an average daily temperature of 29°C, and bottom-out in January with an average daily temperature of -4.6°C.

In recent years Bulgaria has been focusing on developing its tourism industry, and it’s been working. In 2010 Bulgaria saw a 5% increase in tourism, to a total of about 9 million visitors—40% of which came from Greece, Romania, and Germany. Tourism likely to continue increasing as Bulgaria is being recognized more and more in the media as a top travel destination—most notably Bulgaria was mentioned as one of the top nine destinations for 2011 on CNN and one of the top ten most desirable countries to visit in 2011 by Lonely Planet. The reasons for these great recommendations include diverse geography (from beaches to ski hills), low prices, and safety.

Most tourists take a Bulgarian holiday to either the ski hills or the beach. With world-class skiing and snowboarding in the mountains, and kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing on the coast, who wouldn’t want to? But it’s important not to forget that Bulgaria has much more to offer than just surf and slopes.

Bulgaria is about 1/3 mountains, many of which are small and ideal for outdoors adventure sports like whitewater rafting and kayaking, mountain biking, horseback riding, trekking, rock climbing, paragliding, and hang gliding.  The Rila mountains, the tallest in Bulgaria, are said to be the best for rock climbing. Bankso, Bulgaria’s largest ski resort, has been reported to be the best-value ski resort in the world (although the standard for this judgment is unclear) and the Struma River has a great reputation for whitewater rafting and kayaking, especially in the Kresna Gorge.

One thing is certain about Bulgaria. Its proximity to Europe, low prices, temperate climate, and diverse geography are going to make one of the most important and popular adventure travel destinations of the next decade, so it’s probably better to visit sooner rather than later.

Location

Kenya is an equatorial country in East Africa that borders on Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania, and has a coast on the Indian Ocean.

The largest cities in Kenya are the capital Nairobi, and the port city of Mombasa.

Climate and Geography

Kenya is a large country of extraordinary geographical and ecological diversity. At 580,367 km², Kenya straddles the equator, has shoreline on the Indian Ocean in the east and Lake Victoria in the west, and is home to the second tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya, as well as the famous Maasai Mara and Tsavo National Parks. The eastern part of the country is comprised of low-lying plains and hills, which rise into the central highlands (with many peaks over or near 5000 m). The central highlands are divided by the Great Rift Valley, which crosses western Kenya from North to South.

Kenya’s ecology is too diverse to be described briefly, but some highlights include: the Kakamega Forest, which, located in the west of the country, is one of the last remnants of the ancient Guinea-Congolian Rainforest that used to span Africa; Maasai Mara National Park, where one can find all of the ‘Big Five’ (lions, leopards, African elephants, African buffalo, and Black Rhinoceros), as well as hippopotami, Nile crocodiles, leopards, hyenas, jackals, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelles, zebras, antelopes, and Masai giraffes; and Mount Kenya, the second tallest mountain in Africa with a height of 5199 m.

Kenya’s geographic diversity creates climactic diversity. The highest temperature of the day at high altitudes in Kenya is about the same as the lowest temperature at the lowest altitudes. The difference between the low and high temperature of a day is usually about 12 °C, and the average temperature year round fluctuates between 24 and 28 °C. The temperature in Kenya only varies seasonally by just 4 °C, with winter being the hottest season, and summer the coolest.

Tourism is the largest contributor to the service sector in Kenya, which comprises 63% of the country’s GDP. Attracted by the wildlife and geography, travelers come from around the world come to Kenya, the largest numbers coming from Germany and the United Kingdom.

Although the majority of tourists visit the coast, in Kenya safaris are by far the most common adventure travel activity. With over 40 national parks and wildlife preserves there is no shortage of options. The most popular places for safaris include: Maasai Mara National Park, Tsavo National Park (East and West), Ambroseli National Park, and Samburu National Reserve.

Although the majority of people visit Kenya to see nature and wildlife, there is a variety of other adventure sporting activities to add some excitement to the natural beauty. Kenya’s 536 km coastline offers opportunities for surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, and ocean kayaking. Kenya’s central mountain range has many that rise to around 5000 m, so trekking, climbing, abseiling, paragliding, and hang gliding there are all epic. The Tana River is a popular destination for whitewater rafting and kayaking.

• If you stick to local restaurants and groceries Kenya is an inexpensive place to eat. Cheap local restaurants in rural areas will serve meals for $1 USD or even cheaper. In the cities expect to pay a little more. Local markets are also a great place to purchase fresh produce local products.

At just under 2034 km², Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, a volcanic archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa. Although relatively small, Tenerife is geographically diverse. The island’s most prominent geological feature is El Teide, which, at 3718 m, is the third largest volcano in the world (measured from the base) and the highest point in Spain. Because of the great variation in altitude on the island, it is home to six distinct ecological zones. Because of its volcanic heritage the island is host to numerous caves both above and below water, including the Cueva del Viento (Cave of Wind), the longest volcanic tunnel in the European Union. Tenerife’s coastline is mostly rugged and cliffy (and stunning), but there are also plenty of beaches.

Tenerife is called “The Island of Eternal Spring”, and for good reason. Temperatures range from an average of 15°C in the winter to 24°C in the summer. With an average rainfall of only 1mm in July and August, sunny summer days are almost always guaranteed.

Tenerife is the largest and most populous of the Canary Islands. It receives over 5,000,000 visitors annually, and is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world because of the comfortable climate, beaches, caves, and spectacularly diverse geography. Nearly half of the island’s surface is made up of ecological areas that are protected to various degrees, the most famous of which is the Teide National Park, the second most visited national park in the world.

Trade winds and a volcanic coastline make Tenerife ideal for wind and wave sports. There are breaks suitable for all levels of surfers and bodyboarders, and numerous locations for wind and kitesurfing. Beneath the waves, the island’s volcanic geography makes for great scuba and cave diving and the water is always warm (17 – 24°C). El Tiede and the surrounding mountains have trails for hikes and treks of all difficulty levels. The mountains provide launch sites for hang gliders and paragliders, and make a picturesque backdrop for the golf courses. Tenerife, simply put, has almost everything.

Summers on Ibiza are hot and dry, and winters are warm and also very dry. Like it’s sister islands, Ibiza gets more than 300 days of sunshine per year on average.

Ibiza is, of course, widely known as a party epicenter. What is not as well known is the beautiful geography and variety of outdoor adventure sports available on this island. Although most people’s Ibiza holidays focus on nightlife, there are also ample facilities for adventurous activities of all kinds during the day.

Sailing is probably the most popular sport on Ibiza, with marinas found all around the island, and several international events (such as the King’s Cup and Princesa Sofia Trophy) are held on nearby Mallorca. December to June is the best time on Ibiza for wind-powered water sports, like sailing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. Ibiza’s moderate climate and hilly landscape make it a beautiful island for long easy treks and mountain bike rides, especially in the northeast, which remains relatively undeveloped. The coastal cliffs are great climbing and abseiling, and the clean, clear water is ideal for snorkeling.

Marbella is a city on the Costa Del Sol in the province of Málaga, in the autonomous region of Andalusia, Spain.

Climate and Geography

Marbella is a city of approximately 135,000 on Spain’s southern coast, near the tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Sandwiched between the Mediterranean ocean and the Sierra Blanca mountain range, Marbella sits in a rich and diverse geographic area. Nearby are pristine beaches, sections of rugged coastal cliffs, several natural and national parks, and some of the highest mountains on the Iberian Peninsula, including the famous Sierra Nevada Ski Resort.

Located abound 200 km from the Tabernas desert (the only desert in Europe), Marbella has a warm subtropical Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers, and warm, still-pretty-dry winters. In the summer the temperature averages 26°C (with highs around 30°C) and in the winter the temperature averages 17°C, and rarely falls below 15°C. The warm climate, and average 320 days of sunshine that it receives each year, makes it a great destination outdoor adventure activities year-round.

Marbella grew quickly from a village of only 900 people in 1940, to a destination of nearly 100,000 for Europe’s jet-set elite in just 50 years. Now, Marbella is often featured in movies as Spain’s playground for the rich. An affluent modern city steeped in history, Marbella is known for celebrity sightings (Antonio Banderas and Dolph Lundgren, among others, have homes here), sunny weather, and gorgeous beaches. It’s a popular port for luxury yachts, and golf in Marbella is among the finest in Europe. With all the international attention that it gets, flights to Spain are frequent and easy to find.

Although the city itself does not feature much for adventure-seekers, the surrounding area features an incredible diversity of outdoor activities. The surrounding beaches are great for scuba diving and snorkeling. Surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and sailing are all popular here, and competitions in all these sports are often held at nearby Tarifa. The famous Sierra Nevada ski resort is just a 1.5 hour drive from the city, and the nearby Sierra Blanca mountain range is perfect for all manner of extreme sports such as mountain biking, climbing, trekking, canyoning, paragliding, and more. The Camino del Rey walkway, billed one of the scariest walks in the world, is definitely worth a look.
