I arrived in Borneo yesterday. Today I’m ready to head out and explore Borneo on a dirt bike. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to get a motorcycle, or figure out where I should ride it to, when I got here, but I went to Ride Borneo and they totally hooked me up. The gave me a good deal on a bike for the week. Showed me all the best places to go on a map. They even gave me a map and drew the location of every gas station along the way on it (apparently running out of gas is easy to do here).
Now, thanks to Brandon, I have my itinerary worked out. Here it is:
Stop 1: Sabah State Foundation to see if I can talk my way into a press pass into the uber expensive Maliau Basin (otherwise known as the Lost World of Borneo).
Stop 2: Telupid to sleep.
Stop 3: Sepilok to visit the orangoutangs, and maybe some rhinos.
Stop 4: Kinabatangan to go looking for elephants.
Stop 5: Tawau to see the tallest trees in the world.
After that, who knows? With a dirt bike, I can go basically anywhere except into a national park. I’m so glad the boys at Ride Borneo hooked me up.
Hey Matt,
Lucky man, I’m terribly jealous.
You’ll have to tell me how you talk your way into a press pass one day.

Yes, lucky indeed. I actually didn’t even have to do any talking. I told them I was coming to look for elephants, asked who a good guide was, and told them that I would be available if they wanted anything. I think it was this pic that got me the assignment. It was on my front page at the time: https://xpatmatt.com/wp-content/gallery/waimea%20bay/four-surfers.jpg
Crazy good photo, that.
Very cool idea. I’ve been looking for a good place to escape on a bike. Maybe Borneo will be that.
