National Geographic, the company that has exposed the world through thoughtful writing and artful photography to exotic and unknown tribes, giant squids, and the walking Maoi statues of Easter Island have once again outdone themselves.
It’s no secret that Australia is adventure country, and Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria, is no exception. I was daydreaming today about surfing the breaks at Bell’s Beach and ended up drooling over all the outdoors activities in the area. As you can imagine, there are a lot. These four, however, I absolutely must try when I finally make it to the land down under.
Australia is so geographically diverse and unique, it’s hard to pick just a few highlights from the country. There are, however, a few activities that stand out, such as sandboarding in the Pinnacles Desert near Perth. Of course, surfing anywhere in the country is fantastic. The Grampian Mountains northwest of Melbourne have hiking and climbing for visitors of all fitness levels and abilities. I probably don’t need to even mention scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef, but I will.
Dubbed by Bill Bryson the world’s most remote city, Perth is among the best cities in the world for outdoors adventures. There’s fantastic diving on nearby Rottnest Island. Surfing and kitesurfing near Perth are world-class, and sandboarding day trips to the Pinnacles Desert can be arranged.
If you’re planning on taking a trip to enjoy the wonderful outdoors, there are affordable flights to Perth that can be booked in advance with sites such as Expedia.
