Since 2005 National Geographic has held a contest to choose the most outstanding adventurer of the year. This year’s list includes people who have risen to the pinnacle all manner of extreme outdoors activities from trekking the length of the Amazon, to sailing across the Pacific Ocean in a prototype boat made of recycled plastic bottles, to smashing the world record for rowing across the north Atlantic.

My hero is a 7-year-old skateboarding prodigy from Los Angeles named Asher Bradshaw. Bradwhaw has been skateboarding for less than two years and he pulls stunts that I never could have imagined in my teenage skateboarding years. He’s sponsored by Streets of Venice Skateshop and SMA has even made a small custom deck for him. He’s already known throughout the world of skateboarding and has hung with some of the best in the world. There are even rumors that a full-length documentary about him is being made. Last month National Geographic listed the ten greatest discoveries of 2010. Among them are an earthquake that shortened our day, a glimpse of evolution in action with a lizard species in which some members still lay eggs, while others have made the jump to live birth, a study that says black holes are doorways to alternate realities (seriously), and, my favorite, a super cute pink fish that walks on it’s hands along the ocean floor.

Passports with Purpose is a global-minded charity rooted in the travel-blogging community that I am involved with. We are now three weeks into this year’s fundraising. Our goal: to raise $50,000 USD to build a village for members of India’s impoverished underclass.
Yesterday a bit of e-flattery landed in my inbox in the form of an email from a Miss Anna Miller informing me that I made her website’s Top Twenty Travel Writing Blogs list. This email also marks a strange trend for my blog.
